Surprise treat served at a dinner party; dark golden, clean with lovely honeyed overtones and VT PG character still in evidence, surprisingly fresh and balanced and still hanging in there but would drink soon if you have any!

A private tasting and dinner (at home): Remember the Cuba-crisis, anyone? Purchased in 2000 from Majestic on London, a few years after a large cache of this wine had been put onto the UK market. From vineyards close to the Black Sea, harvested at the end of November. Lovely and lively appearance, pale golden with an orange sheen; light and fresh nose, honey and tropical fruit, nice Pinot Gris typicity even after 55 years, slightly dusty; the palate is fresh and juicy, tangerine and ceps, with a delicate sweetness, spicy flavours and noticeable but gentle old-botrytis bitters; off-dry finish, light but intense, hint of fruit, very good length. It is clearly showing its age, but there is plenty of life left.

Remarkably good given its' age for something bought on a whim 20 odd years ago. Still retained the characteristics of a well made vendage tardive wine. Have no idea whether it's still made.

A private dinner (@ Home): Golden colour; lovely botrytis, honey, ambrosial fruit; nice sweetness on the palate, is it slightly tiring? A wonderful surprise.

Still a great wine. Honey, good acidity and complexity, but not too deep.
