Classic fault of Volatile Acidity (VA). Recent purchase from winery's previous owner's library. Clean cork. Dark garnet with bricking rim. Nothing but nail polish remover on the nose and the tactile sensation of high alcohol - you could feel the dissipating alc heat on your nose. This must have been a bad barrel batch. Didn't experience this VA with any previous '08 Qs. We have a second and final bottle and will open it this week. If similar outcome we'll inform the seller.
Seriously awesome juice. Still has a pronounced sweet fruity core, with some secondary aged perfumey notes around that core. Smoothed out - little to no tannins in there. Very California in style: clean and pure. Probably at its peak given the smoothness. One of the best BC reds I've tasted.
Part of three-bottle vertical of Church & State Quintessential (07/08/09). 2008 is still young with more forward tannins and reserved fruit. Medium-plus body with darker red fruits and some vanilla spice. Colour is a bit tawny (brown-orange on the rim) and really coats the glass. A bit out of balance on its own but benefitted materially with proteins and fat. Paired with grilled rare tomahawk steaks.

No question this beast has structure. However, it is not well-balanced. At first we suspected it was too young but then we surmised it was too big a fruit bomb to begin. We bet there was some seriously ripe fruit used to compose this blend from '08. However, the fruit has fallen out of it - the alcohol, tannins and some acidity are there but its not an enjoyable drink unlike the '07 version we had the night before.
