  • Inky dark color. Soaring aromatics could be smelled across the table, still full of spicy vanilla oak, smoky fruit and green notes. On the palate, green pepper, cassis, more oak, and ample hot alcohol (despite the wine's solid depth and even at cellar temperature and after a few hours of air). A bit of chalky tannin and mild acidity remain. The finish lingers very long and quite pleasantly save for the persistent heat. The 13.5% abv seems hard to believe as this is still burning my tongue like a shot of whiskey 2 minutes after my last sip. A strangely impressive wine for the style, perhaps because of its interesting blending of green and super-ripe notes.

  • Drank with Mark, Dave, and John. Fabulous wine. Big flavors, very well balanced with oak and tannins. We also drank a '97. Mouth watering wines, and this was the last bottle of the case of 96's.
