Animal, herb and port notes in the nose. Dark, dense, with initial raspberry notes, followed by animal, sous-bois, garrigue, leather, and roast aromas, the drinking experience is stained by high acidity, wet wood and overmature fruit notes, and I wonder whether this bottle is already over its peak. I will open another bottle in the coming weeks to double check.

Purple. Medium to full-bodied. Red fruit nose and palate, cherry and raspberry, a couple of hours decant brought more life - fuller and evolving red fruit flavours, shrugging off some initial subdued tones (as others have noted) and become livelier, with earthy leather and some oak. Satisfying.

The wine looks tawny colored. The legs are medium. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like flint and coffee. The body is medium/full. The wine finishes medium. The wine has low acidity.

Subdued nose of spice and berries, smooth and spicy on the palate with some fruit coming through, not a lot of length, decent bottle but not great, the Grand Romane Ville Vignes is worth the few pennies more.

Dont make the mistake of under decanting this because of its age. After 30 minutes it feels reduced, innocuous, generic slightly too old CdR. And then it evolves. After 90 minutes the grenache has started to sing; after another hour there is oak, leather, an oiliness that fills the mouth redolent of this wine's younger days. A man who knows a lot about the Rhone reckons this might go 20 years; certainly it has legs yet, and he may well be right.
