This was my first xinomavro and I can easily see why the grape is called the poor man's Barolo. It is uncannily like Nebbiolo, and if you're a fan of Nebbiolo you'll probably like Xinomavro. The wine was medium dark, not deep brooding red. The bouquet is an intriguing mix of underbrush, sage, and damp leaves. The wine is still quite tannic and has a great acid backbone. The flavors are almost all secondary ones, rather than fruit: musk, oak, wet forest, dirt. The wine is medium bodied and overall quite robust, with a rather abrupt, slightly acrid finish that's some might dislike but I find appealing. Best of all, I paid $15. You can't get a Nebbiolo with this much character anywhere near that price. I'll be on the lookout for More Xinomavros!
