Initially sour and a bit funky. I thought maybe it was cooked or corked or both, but the funk diminished a bit and there was a core of some standard fruit. Didn't seem balanced ever. Corked and finished the next day, was not drinkable.

I don't know the Rapel from the Cachapoal so I can't say anything about its terroir, but it seems to be made more in the French style of the grape, which I prefer (v. the Oz/US style), but a bit chunky at the same time. Was a good buy at ~$10 in PA, especially considering the age (though it's worth noting it tastes beyond its years, and is not to be held).

Retailers in my area have been closing this out at deep discount. Bought two bottles, the first one was cooked (probably why it is being discounted) and the second one was in good condition. On the nose : Olive tapenade, wet earth, and smoke. Dark and brooding on the palate with a definite meaty quality accompanied by blackberry. The finish is the low point on this wine, plenty of structured tannins but they come across as austere and steely, lacking fruit.
