  • Opened to pair with butternut squash soup with wild rice and smoky sausage. A bright golden yellow in the glass, the nose features golden delicious apple, meyer lemon, white flowers and a touch of smoke. Very good intensity and concentration, with a touch of butter, pineapple and oak spices. A touch oily, with excellent acidity, this was really good.

  • Nice wine, and notwithstanding the rest of this note, I did enjoy it, at least for what it is. Fresh on the bouquet. Color is quite light, almost clear; a bit odd for Chardonnay. Good acidity on the taste. Not much, if any, mouthfeel or viscosity. Disappointing in that regard. It has something of a Burgundian style as it relates to the initial reaction upon tasting, but even good white Burgundies usually have more heft to them than this wine. Taste citrus, and some pure Chardonnay flavors. Although I enjoyed the freshness and bracing crispness of this wine, it just doesn't seem to be a good example of the Rued clone. The Rued bouquet, and its rich, round flavor, is simply not there. A great example of Rued is the 2010 Dutton-Goldfield Rued Chardonnay (and right now, the 2009 is even nicer). The D-G is much better IMO, and for roughly the same price (on cases). What's more, I doubt the Iron Horse is going to evolve any further in my cellar, whereas, I already know and see the D-G is evolving, and will cellar well for several years. I hope the other small production 2010 Iron Horse Chardonnays I purchased from Lot 18 are better.
