  • If anyone wants to know what a 10-year-plus-old Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon tastes like in its prime, this is a good wine to start with — indeed, to end with as well. We enjoyed it with an all-locally-grown Minnesota meal of leg of lamb, asparagus, wild rice and lettuce salad. 'Tis a true treat in an era when factory-farmed everything, from wine to meat to grains to vegetables, is the sad rule of the day.

Rich color; full, soft, fat, oaky Napa Cab nose; full, rich, ripe cabernet flavors without the plumminess that sometimes sneaks into aged Napa Cabs. This is not a lean, svelte wine but more like a plump mature maiden found in Renaissance Italian paintings. All in all, it's quite a sensual romp into taste hedonism.

UPDATED 8/15/17: This wine continues to amaze. At this point it smells very much like a Rioja Gran Reserva of approximately the same age, though in nose and taste offers a hint of herbs and green olive often found in Cabs from Coombsville and the nearby areas. Tulocay Cabs seem to go on and on and on.
