  • First things first, I think this wine needs more time. Its definitely Rioja, but its just missing something on the mid-palate for a GR (it doesn't really linger long enough) - and I think that added ingredient is a little more slumber.

  • Quite deep and moderately opaque cherry red color with a hint of developed figgy hue. Somewhat restrained nose with aromas of ripe dark fruits, some earthy tones, a little bit of pruney fruit, light licorice powder tones, a hint of meaty umami and a touch of sweet vanilla oak. The wine is rich, quite full-bodied and juicy on the palate with nuanced flavors of succulent dark berries, some sweet oak spice along with nuances of vanilla, a little bit of pruney fruit, light blackcurrant tones, a hint of juicy wizened figs and a touch of earthy spice. The alcohol lends a hint of warmth to the palate. The wine is pretty impressively structured with its moderately high acidity and surprisingly powerful and grippy tannins. The grippy, tannic finish feels quite hot and a bit more developed than the midpalate with long, persistent flavors of leather, dried figs, sweet blackcurrants, some ripe strawberries, a little bit of cocoa oak and a hint of vanilla.

A powerful and concentrated Rioja Reserva that still retains surprisingly firm and tannic structure at the age of 9 years. The fruit department is starting to show the first signs of age, but overall the wine feels still very youthful and remarkably tightly-knit. Stylistically this is pretty classic stuff with the complex and slightly developed fruit department keeping the lead, letting the oakier nuances stay in the supporting role. Although beginning to show some tertiary characteristics, the wine feels like it is still going up at full pace and not at its full drinking window yet. I'd let the wine see its 15th or 20th birthday before popping a bottle up, because this seems to be one of those good ol' Riojas that can take on some aging. Good value at 25,90€.

  • Very good Rioja. Brownish burgundy. Perfectly Rioja nose. Slightly dusty black fruits but with some smoke and tobacco leaf. Still powerful but elegant, with the merest hint of wet wool. Soft and mellow to taste, but with good structure, some remaining nice tannins and a little acid. Summer fruit pudding with slightly sweet, good fruit.
