Wow! This bottle was significantly better than the first I opened a few months back. Medium red with slight bricking. A slight funk initially that quickly blew off. What remained was beautiful! Very complex earthy nose with floral components. Dried sour cherries, strawberries and cranberries, with complex exotic spices, tobacco, cedar and licorice on the finish. This bottle still had lively acidity underlying it all with smooth but slightly grippy tannins. Long lingering finish of sweet tobacco, anise and hints of coffee. Fully mature.

Altogether too dark. Very prominent volatile acidity that briefly let go but returned later. Full, lots of fruit and tar but a strangely confected, pruny character. I'd guess that this bottle saw some heat along the way, as it was completely different than the impeccable bottle earlier this year that came directly from di Gresy's cellars. Very disappointing after seeing how good this wine can be at this age.

Marchesi di Gresy Barbaresco Martinenga: 1978 to 2007 (Acquerello, San Francisco): Slightly less saturated than the Gaiun. More herbal aromatic profile. Subtly sweet, remarkably fresh. Great purity of fruit and perfect, lively acidity to balance. Classic, complex, beautifully delicate, and long. This was the first wine of the tasting that struck me as fully mature although it has the stuffing and balance to last quite a while.

Classic barbaresco nose of sour cherry, forest floor, and lots of scorched tar. It has a touch of prune fruit as well, as though the grapes were left to hang a touch too long. The scorched component waned with extended aeration, and the wine definitely improved over time.
