  • CNY Dinner 2013 - Welcoming the Year of the Snake (William & Gina's): Still enjoyable – this was quite remarkable considering how old it was. The nose seemed to suggest that the wine was starting to tire at first, dominated as it was by boiled herb, earth and undergrowth notes, but it opened up rather encouragingly with fresher notes of cooked cherries, hawthorne flakes and something faintly floral at the edges – all this was still layered with a good amount of old Burg funk though. Same thing on the palate - funky undergrowth layered over a nice core of sweet preserved cherries and berries, with more red hawthorne flakes at the sides. But this time, the funk took a back-seat to a lovely glow of matured sweetness, especially on the midpalate. It then finished surprisingly well, with a slight chocolatey spice and herb note. Lovely complexity, and still decent balance and structure - not a complete wine, and quite clearly past peak, but this was quite amazing for a 45 year old village.
