  1998 GUNDLACH-BUNDSCHU ESTATE VINEYARD SONOMA MERLOT- tasted blind; I was surprised to find this wine showed about as well as any on the night; surprised because I`ve had little of any wines from this producer other than Zinfandels over all their years even tho they`ve been around since the 1880s; our bottle was showing some age with some bricking, but the nose and flavour profile shined with lots of nice tertiary red and black fruit and a slight evidence of oak influence; red cherry actually prevailed over the other fruit in this somewhat balanced and softly textured Merlot
