Deep garnet red. Aged characteristics on the nose with burnt or smoked wood, a little mesquite, red berries and some dark soil. Moderate tannins (6.5/10) and medium to medium plus bodied. Definitely not as much power as the 1996. Light baking spices on the palate with some soft red fruits. A little something in the long finish. Drink now.

This bottle was awesome and improved with air in the glass. Red and black cherry fruit with wonderful acidity that kept interesting and fresh. Notes of tobacco and birch root add depth. Long finish. body increased over time. Not showing signs of tiring.

Aging but still enjoyable. Raspberry nose followed by ripe fruit and medium long finish. Very mild tannins.

1997 Stag's Leap Retrospective (Northbrook, IL): Dusty. Well balanced. Classic. Medium body with grainy tannins. Probably under-rated by me. My 7, group 3.
