Perplexed surely summarises my thoughts after having thoroughly enjoyed the Torres Bordeaux blend Reserva Real f the vintage of the new millenium (v00, 14% ABV, bottle 5,287/7,571). Non-aged marked deep claret in appearance. Sharp & sleek, fresh fruit-forward nose w aromas of cherries, cassis & plums, leather, smoke. Sensual & sublime full-bodied & spicy palate, superb & still youthful texture - neither tense, nor lean - just generous w outstanding energy. V balanced acidity, poise & precision. Closing polished & spicy.

Final bottle, pristine condition, No. 3030/7571. A supremely prestigious wine from Torres, rated even above the Mas la Plana and the Grans Muralles by the producer. It is clear that every care has been lavished on this wine. The essence however is that this is Cabernet Sauvignon grown on slate and I keep wondering whether that really works. Deep colour, extremely youthful appearance even at 15 years of age. Slender, tannic, structured, cool and energetic, sweet blackcurrants, liquorice, very dusty minerality, excellent length. An uncompromising wine. Should last for a very long time, but I doubt whether this will be able to achieve a real synthesis.

From the Las Arnes vineyard in Mediona, planted in 1981 to CS (and some CF/M) on licorella soils. 18 months in Tronçais oak, bottled August 2003, 7571 bottles and 104 magnums. Massively structured, even double decanted on day two still mysterious; the oak has been completely absorbed, interplay of sweet cassis fruit and slate. Good length. Needs time, but I am not sure CS on slate is such a good idea after all. Elizabeth liked it though. Try last bottle in 2015.
