  • Some Pinot Noirs of the World: Excellent when served at a proper temperature. We had two bottles, one at 17-18, one at 23C and you couldn't tell that it is the same wine. Colder one was infinetely more interesting and deep.

  • Translucent ruby color, which is rather deep for a Pinot Noir. Ripe dark cherry and pronounced oak aromas of rum, cognac, cola nut and sweet smoke. There is some room for the fruit, but oak is definitely in charge here - hard to believe the wine has seen "only" 40% new oak. In the mouth the wine has mid-bodied mouthfeel with bright acidity, but that's as far as it goes with nice things. Flavor-wise there are some ripe cherry and forest fruit flavors, but overall the palate is dominated by notes of aged cognac, toasty wood and cola. Even though the wine has nice acidic structure, the mouthfeel is smooth and soft due to very smooth, ripe tannins and overwhelming sweet oak. Lots of sweet cognac oak in the finish with lingering flavors of sour cherry lift, bitter wood and some red fruits like raspberry and tart lingonberry.

Really a let-down: I suppose Torres has aimed for a big and unctuous Pinot Noir in the vein of Grand Cru Burgundy, but overall the wine tastes like oak exctract flavored with some Pinot Noir. I have no idea why producers want to drown a variety this delicate under tons of new oak. I have no idea whether this wine had capabilities being a good Pinot Noir or not, because I really can't assess the quality of the wine underneath this much oak. Really anonymous and off-putting expression of this wonderful grape variety.

Excellent rapport qualité-prix.
