  • Dark, semi-black pomegranate red color with quite a bit of translucency. Very smoky and toasty nose with oak-driven aromas of roasted wood, tar, earthy spices, some chocolatey mocha tones, a little bit of ripe blackcurrant and a hint of plummy fruit. The wine is dry, medium-bodied and quite ripe yet relatively tightly-knit on the palate with somewhat sweet-toned flavors of crunchy cranberries, sweet black cherries, some chocolatey oak, a little bit of gravelly minerality, light cocoa tones, a hint of caramel and a touch of peppery Pinosity. Overall the wine feels textural and moderately structured with its high acidity, although the tannins are quite light and offer only pretty little grip. The finish is dry, dull and lacking freshness with its moderately long yet very oak-driven flavors of toasted wood, mocha, some extracted woody bitterness, a little bit of ripe black cherries, a hint of peppery spice and a touch of toffee.

A ripe and enjoyably textural Pinot Noir that suffers from the typical pitfall of the Austrian Pinot Noirs: excessive use of oak. Although the wine shows the typical characteristics of a wine from the warm vintage 2009, it would've been surprisingly nice and harmonious, if it weren't for the heavy-handed oaking that seems to obfuscate not only most of the finer nuances of the wine, but also most of the overt fruit flavors as well. Basically this wine tastes like different oak flavors with some blackcurrant and cherry tones. All in all, not really my cup of tea. Perhaps a more fitting wine for people with more Californian taste and who are less averse to oak.
