This Margaux 2012 is just entering its drinking window, and is absolutely charming in style. Graceful sweet fruit, powdery tannins, lithe body, and excellent, fine concentration make for a precise, neat, and hugely pleasing claret. The best Paveil de Luze in recent years. Robert Parker was full of praise for the 2012: “under-rated and could easily qualify as a classified growth”.
NEAL MARTIN, MAY 2013, SCORE: 86-88
Tasted from a barrel sample at en primeur. The Paveil de Luze has a crisp, tertiary, cedar-tinged nose that is quite Pauillac in style with a minty freshness. The palate is nicely balanced with crisp acidity – quite masculine with noticeable tobacco/cigar box notes and a slightly clipped, dry finish. Hopefully it will flesh out during its élevage. Tasted April 2013.
ANTONIO GALLONI, JANUARY 2016, SCORE: 90
A powerful, authoritative wine, the 2012 Paveil de Luze is shaping up to be one of the under-the-radar gems of the year. Earthy and smoky notes add nuance, but it is the wine's explosive, deep personality that stands out most. Expressive floral, savory and ferrous notes meld into the expressive finish. Although the 2012 is more power than finesse, it offers exceptional balance and tons of personality. The blend is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot. This is an impressive effort from Paveil de Luze, a Margaux property that could probably be a classified growth. Simon Blanchard is the consulting winemaker. Drink 2016-2032.
ROBERT PARKER, APRIL 2015, SCORE: 89
The president of the society of cru bourgeois (Alliance des Crus Bourgeois du Médoc), Baron De Luze, has produced another beautiful wine from his lovely estate. His 2012 Margaux exhibits supple texture, a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, loads of blackcurrants, a hint of forest floor and floral notes. This is a silky textured, medium-bodied, yet lovely, concentrated wine that is endearing, complex, and typical of this terroir, which is probably under-rated and could easily qualify as a classified growth. Drink it over the next 7-10 years. A sleeper. Drink 2015-2025.

  • Not what I was expecting from a Margaux Bordeaux. The drinking window may have closed on this.

  • Hmm... doesn't smell so good. Like pickle juice? Maybe corked? I've had this bottle before...

  • On day two: Nope. They open a freshy.

And hoo... the nose is intrancing. Even the Frenchmen in the group is blown away. 70% Cabernet and then Merlot mostly for the rest and then some of the others missing malbec.

And wow, great palate, lots of finesse, delicious. A touch tight on the palate now but hey, its a '12 that was just opened. 60% new oak but doesn't show. 32 hectares.
