  • Quite translucent and somewhat developed cherry red color with a maroon hue and a colorless rim. The nose is quite heavily vegetal with a rather pronounced streak of grated beetroot along with aromas of cooked bell pepper, some wizened forest fruits, a little bit of damp soil and a hint of licorice. The wine is medium-to-moderately full-bodied, cool and a bit dilute on the palate. Flavors of cooked beetroot, some ripe blackcurrant, a little bit of leafy greenness, light earthy notes of damp soil, crunchy hints of redcurrants and lingonberries and a touch of bell pepper. The wine is rather high in acidity with quite firm and moderately assertive medium-plus tannins. The finish is moderately grippy with dry, long flavors of damp autumnal leaves, some bell pepper, a little bit of ripe blackcurrant, light notes of beetroot and a tart hint of lingonberry bitterness.

A cool, lean Chinon that feels like it is a bit dilute and while showing some sense of ripeness, the overall feel is still slightly underripe. There are some bell pepper notes that are to be expected from a Loire Cabernet Franc, but there's a bit of some leafy and weedy greenness as well, along with slightly watery fruit and earthy notes of damp soil that make the wine feel a bit underwhelming. At 9 years of age the wine isn't showing much sense of falling apart and I can imagine it could actually keep for some years longer, but I doubt the wine will benefit much from further aging. The overall impression was better than on the last time - 3 years ago - but quite marginally so. Doesn't seem to be a great vintage for this wine.

  • Lean and leafy--a bit short on fruit. Almost no tannins. Drink up.

  • Green peppercorn nose and taste. Harsh tannins that mellow with food. Spiciness brought out by spicy food

  • Slightly translucent inky red-dark color with the slightest touch of developed maroon hue. Very green, pungent and smoky nose with robust aromas of leafy vegetal notes, green bell pepper, some wasabi, a little unripe dark fruit character, hints of pickles and a touch of sour cherry. Medium-bodied, dry and somewhat green on the palate with crunchy flavors of sour cherries, lingonberries, tart dark-skinned berries, general bitterness, some sweeter red fruits and a hint of pickle. Somewhat cold and hard, but quite resolved structure with high-ish acidity and medium tannins. The finish is somewhat bitter with flavors of cherries, some sour cherries, a little vegetal green character and a hint of bell pepper.

The nose here was a bit too overpowering, showing both some reductive character and some barely ripe fruit character making me question whether this wine was good at all. However, on the palate the wine felt more balanced and resolved with quite typical Loire Cab Franc characteristics, quite pure fruit and a balancing, bitter edge. Quite good, but overall somewhat nondescript effort - far from the best wines of the region. Priced more or less according to its quality at 13,39€.
