  • Decanted shortly before dinner to remove the sediment. Very much soy-driven nose with dried cherry, tar and sous bois. Really generous and expressive. Incredibly sweet-fruited and lively, just takes over the palate. The tannins are very alive still, gripping gently but not in a drying way. Just packed with flavor all the way through the lingering finish. Nothing here to indicate that it would be over the hill.

  • Decanted off the sediment (of which there was very little!) and consumed over the following two hours. 13% alcohol, bottled in a 0,72-liter bottle.

Evolved maroon color with a tertiary syrupy-brown hue. Quite obviously evolved nose full of classic tertiary Nebbiolo aromatics: soy sauce and beef jerky, wizened dark berries, some earthy notes, a little bit of dried sour cherry, light tarry notes, an iron hint of blood and a touch of forest floor. The wine feels dry, medium-bodied and quite tertiary on the palate with complex flavors of earth and tart lingonberries, some sour cherry bitterness, a little bit of stony minerality, light oxidative notes of beef jerky and soy sauce, umami hints of gamey meat and a touch of tar. The overall feel is still remarkably structured for a wine almost 60 years old, thanks to the bright high acidity and still moderately grippy, textural and somewhat resolved tannins. The finish is dry, evolved and somewhat grippy with complex, savory flavors of beef jerky, salty soy sauce tones, some wizened sour cherry notes, a little bit of crunchy cranberry and more dark-toned forest fruits, light gravelly mineral tones, a smoky hint of tar and a touch of raisiny fruit.

Another solid bottle of this wonderful aged Nebbiolo. This wine is obviously at its peak, based on its tertiary fruit flavors and subtly oxidative notes of beef jerky and soy sauce, yet the wine really doesn't feel like it would be gliding downhill anytime soon. Pretty much what one would ask for a Nebbiolo almost 60 years old. Feels a tad lighter and more delicate than its Barolo and Barbaresco cousins from the 1960's, but not one bit less impressive in terms of depth and complexity. Fine stuff. A steal at 16€.

  • 13% alcohol. Tasted half-blind.

Translucent, dark brick-orange color with a moderately wide, pale yellow rim. Sweet-toned, aged nose with aromas of wizened cherries, some dried roses and other fragrant flowers, a little bit of leather, light beef jerky tones, hints of tar and smoke and a sweet touch of raspberry jam. The wine is medium-bodied, focused and surprisingly vibrant for its age with pleasantly developed flavors of tart lingonberries and cranberries, some sour cherry bitterness, a little bit of astringent rowanberries, light floral notes of dried roses, subtle sanguine notes of bloody meat, a hint of stony minerality and a touch of tar. The wine is high in acidity with fully resolved, textural tannins. Developed, crunchy finish with flavors of wizened sour cherries, some crunchy cranberries, a little bit of dried roses, light sanguine notes of bloody meat, a hint of rusted iron and a touch of tar.

A beautiful, fully resolved Ferrando Carema at its peak. The wine is getting quite tertiary, but the fruit is still fully alive and hasn't thinned out much yet. Most likely won't evolve anywhere from here but down. Doesn't reach the heights of the best old Barolos and Barbarescos, but nevertheless exceeds my expectations and then some. Outrageous value at 16€.

  • It started off with a very metallic palate and a funky nose but after a while it got better. Tar, dusty old wardrobe and coffee on the nose with some dried herbs, caraway seeds and allspice. After a while some floral notes appeared and also some meaty notes. Palate had medium weight, surprisingly grippy with medium tannins and a balanced acidity. Faint fruit still left, some raspberry marmalade, woody herbs and ripe lingonberries on the long taste with a salty minerality in the end.
Very well preserved old wine and the best thing is that this was my "worst" bottle of the three that I kept for myself after sharing some with my friends.

  • Excellent wine! Clearly mature Nebbiolo combined with beautiful elegance that I expect from high-elevation examples of the grape. Dusty, layered, powerful, white truffles, and dessicated rose petals. Continued to get better as the night went on!
