  • Not surprisingly (considering Palmer's '83), this is very nice and still drinking well. Excellent storage conditions so this is well-preserved. Starting to turn a bit orange at the edges, but has a nice medium ruby color. Dark fruits, leather, musk, violets, and cedar on the nose. Good mouthfeel on the palate with good density and weight. Falters a bit at the finish (in its length). Still has some tannins to resolve. Acidity in perfect harmony right now. Can't fault the balance here. This is how a claret should be. I'm quite surprised at the previous notes; perhaps there were storage issues.

  • Trip to Bordeaux. Interesting to try this wine given the performance of 83 Margaux. Nice mix of dark fruit, earth, cedar and a touch of spice. Enjoyable texture and balance. Faded after about 90min.

  • Verticale of Chateau Palmer (Toulouse, France): Hey! Not fair! 1983 is NOT after 1986, and that totally put me off (yet another piece of evidence that when you create expectations, people have a hard time going away from them). The nose was really nice, very fruity, the palate was silky, maybe a bit weak and with herbal notes, the finish was nice. I thought '88 and was pleasantly surprised it was the ringer.
