This very pleasant example of a California version of Malbec lies somewhere between the sweet/fruity/jammy/over-the-top Malbecs from Argentina and the restrained, new style of Malbecs from Cahors.
A small amount of merlot, cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc in the blend adds a bit of spice to the finish. Or could that be from the malbec cuttings for the vineyard having been grafted onto existing cabernet franc vines? Pure speculation, of course.
Aging in blended oaks plus the inherent ripe malbec character gives it a restrained sweetness (rather than the overly tutti-fruity-grapey sweetness found in the Argentine versions) yielding a well-balanced red overall. With a fairly high pH, it's made to drink now rather than aged, though some time in the bottle might bring forward another dimension.
