Nose: Brown and granularly sweet. Light in strength, but rather syrupy sweet with hints of flowers, overripe plum, almond paste. Orange, cinnamon, and brown sugar. With time, a little more pruneau and soft purple fruits. As sweet as it is, it doesn't seem cloying, but it does come off as a bit light and watery - the aromas, though, are at least promising.

Palate: Ah, rather nice here at first. Clearly a bit of oak and rancio. Prune/plum and a mild grapiness buttressed by some orange rind and a light stewed fruit sauce. Maybe some bitter walnuts and almonds as well. Light on the palate, and has clearly had a bit of water added. If this were richer or more substantial, it'd be really something else, but, pretty obviously, it's not something else. It is what it is. Cognac notes and tautologies, who knew?

Finish: The fruit fades quickly; there's just a haunting hint of purple stone fruit and some spice. The rancio and oak flavors remain more dominant - almost cardboard, which comes off a bit odd, as well as some sweetness. This has a lot of promise, and really just needs more fruit and some spice to stand up to the cardboard, which is a touch off. I'm intrigued and looking forward to trying more R-S.
