  1916 was the best of the World War I years according to different sources. This wine is a Negociant bottling by famous Bordeaux house "A. de Luze et Fils". It is not clear nor stated if this is a blend from 1, 2 or all 3 of the Léoville estates. My guess is that due to the hardship of the war years, more wines would have been bottled by Negociants rather then estate bottled. Bottle was mid shoulder only, wax seal partly broken down. They used rather small corks in many of the wines these days (38mm compared to 55mm in top bottles these days). I was worried looking at the colour, fairly light orange-red with considerable browning. In the nose interesting leathery notes, a bit of a horse farmyard character to it. The mouthfeel was incredible oily and velvety in texture. Tannins very soft, fairly low acidity. A well balanced, most enjoyable wine to drink. Can't get over the velvety mouthfeel, must have tons of glycerine in it. Maybe overripe fruit at the time ? Respect to the people who suffered during the Great War. What an experience to drink and enjoy such an old wine.
