  • ESTG Northern Rhône: A funny little Southern Rhône ringer in a Northern Rhône tasting. A little dirty smelling at first, raspberry ganache, white pepper, pine, quite sweet, especially in comparison to the much more savory Syrah we had before and after. (Now had someone tracked down the Syrah specific Cuvee from this producer, that would have been a fun ringer to play with.)

  • 2001 Le Clos du Caillou "Les Roches Rondes" Cotes du Rhone Villages Cuvee Unique, alc 14.5%, $30: Quite sulfur-y upon opening (an avec soufre bottling?) this partially blows off but still lingers slightly later..bright berry flavors more than any blood, leather or iron... good but not very "Rhone-y"... perhaps even could be mistaken for an Aussie shiraz..still showing quite young.. Perhaps time will provide more complexity and typicity.. perhaps not

  • Restrained, semi-fragrant blue berry nose. Black fruit with chocolate abd tobacco. Large round mouthfeel with absolutely no heat; fully resolved tannin even this early. This is a fine-fruited, satisfying drink, a bit elemental and blockish in the mouth. More oak and tannin and alcohol evident in the CdR Vielles Vignes ($15) bottling -- this is much more integrated and balanced, and ready to be enjoyed in the mouth.

  • Excellent Cotes du Rhone: well-balanced, complex, expansive finish, almost Burgundian on the palate. To me, this wine is fully mature and should be drunk fairly soon.

  • Something seemed wrong here. Tight, bitter, showing some volatility. It was undrinkable on day 1. I refrigerated the bottle and tried again on day 2 adn was surprised to find that it had integrated and come around quite a bit and was almost attractive. I am going to call this flawed, as it just didn't seem right.
