  • I’m not sure how much effect a screw cap influences the course of a sweet wine (8.5% alcohol).. Ten years on this wine is aging without any obvious flaws. This bottle was one of many bought on release and stored without disturbing. Last tasted by my son Seth (see note from 2016). The color certainly reflects the age taking on a deep yellow color. Unmistakably Riesling. No question this is a mature wine but nowhere over-the-hill. On the nose caramel, pit fruit melon and strong clove/cumin spice tones. The taste reflects the nose with an underlying minerality and soft acidity creating a wonderful balance. The finish persists forever enough to effect the taste of something else which is eaten afterwards. I’m not sure how long a screw cap wine can last however I am anxious to find out.

  • this was very very nice... bright with acidity, nice sweetness but not heavy, lovely mineral and lemon melange... tasty!!

  • Excellent. Great energy, zippy quality, full tropical fruits, juicy, definitely in Spatlese territory. Perfect spot--and interesting to see a screw-top age so well.

  • 2010 Anrecht is still killing it. The nose screams Zeltinger with cumin, chili peppers, dusty/chalky minerals, crunchy apple, brothy salinity, a bit of peach and a touch of lime. The nose is wonderful but just a touch blunt. The palate is drop dead gorgeous it enters sweet with honey, peach and red apple, and then the cumin, spices and chili peppers come in. Next, in the mid palate, the screaming acidity comes in with nectarine, lime and tangerine. The mouthfeel is just perfect - great creamy texture from the fruit and sweetness, but light and sizzling from the acid. The finish is long, lively and right on pitch from the lime and tangerine acidity, backed up by the apple and stone fruit flavors. By the end of a sip, the salivary glands are on overdrive. Just stupid. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5.5/6 Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17.5/20.

  • Stone fruit, orange, tropical fruits, and flowers. Very sweet, with incredible acid to balance. Interesting mouthfeel - simultaneously creamy and very light and lithe. Very long, complex, honeyed finish yields to pineapple and sweet lime. Big, very enjoyable wine. Would love to try it again in 10 years. Should buy some.

(Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Himmelreich Riesling "Anrecht") ($39.00) This isn’t as arch or screamy as the wonderfully manic ’09; it has more material to struggle through. The giant is just waking up. What starts to come through is almost scary; a sinus-clearing mass of spearmint and verbena and spiced apple. Stand by me and hold my hand when I taste it again.
