  • Christmas dinner wine with Prime Rib.
Fruit day, 3hr decant prior to consumption.

Nose: A little tight immediately upon opening with very bracing alcohol and red fruit. With time, it softened but still retains a very powerful and ripe nose. Brambly, some mild tomato stem with musk and terroir rounding out what is a predominantly fruit-forward nose.

Palate: Very fruit forward and clearly a more modern take on CdP. Again, alcohol does detract slightly as the heat carries through on the initial taste. Despite the fact, the modern style makes this a great candidate to introduce new world drinkers to old world wines as this is a wine definitely not suited for those seeking light and delicate notes.
Blackberry and black cherry dominate the fruit, complimented by dark chocolate shavings and very faint garrigue in the background. The musk and terroir on the nose definitely didn't translate and acidity is actually in quite good balance overall. Tannins are present but approachable and I'd reckon it is just starting the development towards the tertiary elements at this point in time.

Overall this is drinkable now, especially for those seeking a more modern take. Oddly enough it reminds me of earlier tastings of 2012 Guerrieri Rizzardi Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 3 Cru, that I consumed a couple years back so I wonder if the development might follow a similar path (in that situation, my 3rd and last bottle ended up being the best of the bunch and left me wishing I had more patience). Irrespective of that parallel, I'd plan to hold this for at least another couple years before re-examining in hopes of further development and departure from the ripe hot elements dominant today.
89 for now, TBD on the future.

  • Simply perfect and delicious...quite impressive!!
