  • Brookie and I drank this bottle after 45-60 minutes decanting, with white truffle and mushroom red sauce over spaghetti. Well done Brookie! I got dark fruit, earth, very nicely integrated, well-rounded, paired well with the food. Persistent finish. Outstanding vintage. Nowhere near done.

The first note Brookie got was floral, which I did not. However, I have found that Brookie sometimes get notes that I do not, but after she chimes in the suggestion starts to register with me. This is a $50 bottle that is well worth the money. Rich, complex, some might say brooding.

I can't say this wine is likely to develop further, but I wouldn't really rule it out either. This is a well made wine from a special vintage. I will open the next bottle in 2-3 years. You can never have too many $15 bottles that drink like $30 bottles, and you can never have too many $40 bottles that drink like $80 bottles. This is a $40 bottle that drinks like an $80 bottle.

After completing the review I read the body to Brookie and asked her opinion. She said "no way". She gave the wine a score in the upper 80's. I will note that she had a very bad day, and I think that may have contributed to her opinion. Euphoric feelings are known anecdotally to accentuate the experience of a bottle of wine. Conversely, a down day will negatively affect the perception. I note this information for the sake of completeness of our experience, and to avoid discounting Brookie's opinion.

One final note: I did not read any professional opinions until after I completed the bulk of this review. The ratings ranged from 92-94. James Suckling's review (I don't value his point ratings very much and generally think he exaggerates) is dead on in my opinion, and he also scored this wine at 93.
