Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.4 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 8 notes)

Tasted by sayward on 8/11/2009 & rated 90 points: We drank this in conjunction with a 1997 Caymus Special Select and I am sure that this N & N is a nice wine, but the Caymus was a tough act to follow. It was smooth in the mouth and nice blue berry on the nose. (444 views)
Tasted by ldorf on 3/21/2009 & rated 89 points: Huge tanins that start strong and finish stronger. The wine is good, but the tanins cover some of the experience. Tobacco, coal, mineral. Drinking this in an afternoon by itself and think it could have stayed in the bottle another 10 years and been great with food. Too bad, don't have another one to try that with. (608 views)

Tasted by jonb72 on 6/14/2007 & rated 92 points: decanted an hour before drinking, no sediments, drank smoothly, well balanced tannins and oak (1607 views)
Tasted by zimmy07 on 4/21/2007 & rated 92 points: very different from the other notes. This would full bodied with flavors of cola, cedar and spice, I thought it drank great, Maybe has hit its window now, Probably the WOTN.Supplte tannins (1578 views)
Tasted by babnik on 3/29/2006 & rated 83 points: A light, thin wine, not without its charm but lacking the mid-body concentration I'd like to see in this level of Cabernet. Floral aromas. Red berries, cocoa, and coffee. Not much oak. Slightly green tannins. Could use more mouthfeel. From Nickel & Nickel's home vineyard. I've recently had much better wines from N&N's Rock Cairn and Tench vineyards from this tough vintage. Back in 2004 I thought this wine was showing well but this year it's a pass. (2167 views)
Tasted by flashvictor on 11/17/2005 & rated 90 points: Medium ruby color leads to a nose of cherry and soft leather. The palate shows medium bodied fruit with a smooth finish. The predominate flavors are cherry, sage, black plum and soft leather. This wine is enjoyable now and I think will last for several more years. (2418 views)
Tasted by babnik on 1/5/2004 & rated 90 points: Dark, almost opaque color. After an hour of decanter time a subtle nose of sweet cherries opens up and which continues on the pallate with cassis, pine, and mild oak. Not a big wine, but the tannins are well integrated in a very pleasant way. Drinking well right now. (2361 views)

The Nickel & Nickel winery, founded in 1997 but born from a tradition of exceptional winemaking, is devoted to creating wines that articulate the singular expressions of the vineyards in Oakville and beyond.

Established by the partners of Far Niente, Nickel & Nickel is based on a philosophy of producing 100 percent varietal, single-vineyard wines that best express the distinct personality of each vineyard. The winery’s current releases include Napa Valley Chardonnay, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as Russian River Valley Chardonnay, Syrah and Zinfandel.

Nickel & Nickel represents a distinct departure from the flagship Far Niente estate wines that are produced from a combination of vineyards and varietals. The partners also felt it necessary to have a winemaker devoted to each winery – Far Niente, Dolce and Nickel & Nickel -- in order to produce the quality wines that are their hallmark. These factors, along with a noticeable upsurge in the market’s interest in vineyard-designated wines, led to the launch of Nickel & Nickel as a separate brand.

California Wines (Wine Institute of California)

California is one of the most diverse wine regions in the world, with almost 100 grape varieties grown in almost 10 viticultural areas, including dozens of different microclimates and soil types, as well as a very individualistic set of winemakers, many with international experience, which adds to and deepens that diversity.
