  • Half bottle from a friend's cellar. Barely chilled. The cork came out in little bits so the wine was decanted. Beautiful golden color with the scent of honeyed walnuts. Some viscosity but not full bodied.
Very tart, and the sweetness is hardly noticed.
Some smoke and nuttiness mixes in with the apricot, tart apple, and citrus fruit flavors. Bracing acidity and a very long finish.
This is easily the best Auslese I've had. Wonderful!
(7.8%abv) The half bottle was just enough for 3 people as an aperitif.

  • (Mostly) Grunhausfest (My place, CT): This is awesome - powerful, complex, long, with an array of fruit ranging from tarter lime and savoury baked apple flavours to sweeter tropical fruits. There's clear botrytis apparent here with a sheen of honeyed and spicy notes augmenting the fruit, along with more mature smoky and other savoury elements, but the whole package is completely seamless with all the flavours, sweetness, and acidity all coming together into a whole. Tremendous wine with great balance and length, and a real treat.

  • Yet another farewell to Salil (Vernon, CT): It is interesting to read the other notes on this wine, with mention of the dark color and advanced taste. This bottle was in great shape; excellent fill, good cork and a surprising light color. The flavors were explosive with fresh tropical fruits, baked apple and spices. Nice slate notes come in late. Superb acids. I find this particular bottle quite young and regret opening it so soon.

  • An exceptional wine, showing you what auction wines deliver in the hands of top producers like Zilliken.

Like most wonderful old Mosel auslesen, the viscosity became reduced to a pleasing middle-bodied wine with a darkening honey/caramel color, no brown edges, but a distinct lighter profile than one from the Rheinghau. developers was everything one could expect from a tropical flower garden, honeysuckle, lemon, petrol, burnt sugar, and caramel. On the palate, a tiny bit of burnt sugar, plenty of honey,, kumquat, loquat, sweet lemon, and the hint of grapefruit

The rating would be even higher were not for the fact that this wine is on the decline and that the final phase on the palate shows some acid instead of a further explosion of tropical fruit.

  • This is an auction bottling, AP 14, from CT it looked liked it was actually a Long GK (capsule was long, but without another to compare to unsure). Cork was a little protruding, and apparently slid right in. Advanced color, but still a very enjoyable wine. Petrol, apple pie, slatey mineral notes. Excellent length. This probably isn't up to a pristine bottle, but I enjoyed (and drank a lot!). A-/B+
