Decanted at a local restaurant and consumed over the next two hours. Did not meet expectations for a Pinot from Hyde Vineyards. An edgy in your face fruit forward wine lacking the restraint and soft silkiness that was anticipated. Purchased directly from the Vintner and recommend leaving in the cellar until at least 2022 in hopes of positive evolution.

This is not a bad wine—in fact it was a good wine—but I felt that I did better for the price with the Talley Rincon (also 2012) last week. Lovely rose aromatics dominate and beautiful dark cherry and blackberry fruit, with hints of pencil lead, licorice, candied sugars (making this wine distinctively California), dust, and heavy spice on the finish. Compared to the Talley Rincon, which comes from Arroyo Grande in the Central Valley, I found this more quintessentially “Napa” (or warmer California rather than cooler climate California?) and in the case of Pinot Noir, I’m not sure that this was a good thing. Lovely, pure fruit, dusty minerality dominated the palate, but I didn’t find this to have the nuance that the Talley Rincon had.

Nose: The shows is ripe, but balanced with raspberries, red cherries, pomegranate, sour cranberries, floral tones and some clove spice notes. There is excellent depth and poise with a freshness to the fruit tones.
Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium acidity and medium tannins. The feel is plush with raspberries, red cherries, pomegranate, spice notes, and sour red fruits.
Overall: This is an excellent Pinot. While it can age longer, it is gorgeous right now the way it is with showing riper red fruits.

Red fruit take center stage. A light touch of minerality makes an appearance on the finish. Excellent balance and texture.
