  • The 2011 vintage has been heralded as a difficult vintage by winemakers and consumers alike, which is why it's good to see a 2011 example like 'The Red' from The Islander Estate. The wine has depth, structure and interest with the unique combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Sangiovese peaking my interest from the outset.

The wine is a medium red in colour, with a nose that highlights the Malbec with a sweet cherry cola aroma that is contrasted by smokey and peppery blackberry from the Cabernet Franc.

The palate is well structured with blackberry and cherry fruit supported by broad tannins, with the cabernet franc adding some real interest and complexity on the mid to back palate with tobacco and cassis.

The wine finishes with savoury characters, cocoa and some slightly astringent dark berry fruits.
