  • Dark garnet.
Nose very nice from the get go, vanilla, confection, spice, flinty mineralite, game, freshly slaughtered duck, mint, tarragon, subtle complexity. Following half an hour strong beef stock, after an hour cherry liqueur. Ever changing.
Palate initially quite youthful, Morello, baking spice, mirepoix, limestone mineralite. Following an hour more savoury, soy, quite saline. Very nice.

  • Drank this at Imperial Treasure Fine Teochew Cuisine (Tanjong Pagar Centre) to celebrate a mate's 40th birthday.

Red in colour with fading notes of plums, cherries and strawberries. A good introduction of an aged Burgundy; some earthy and mushroom notes were evident after some time in the glass.

Wine is very much drinkable but at the last stage of its drinking window. Do consider opening the remaining bottles if you still have them in your collection.

  • After a disappointed 1978 bottle, I decided to open the backup bottle wanting to show to the tasting group that a pristine bottle would taste better. This bottle is without vintage label but the ullage is better than the previous bottle at 3.5 to 4.5 cm below cork. Cork condition is better too and successful extracted by two prong opener after some serious effort.
Appearance is quite promising, brighter dark ruby with mahogany tinge. But the nose showing the same funky notes, along with earth, dried fruits, nuts, soy sauce and blackcurrant. Fortunately palate is still very much alive with some blackcurrant and red cherry on entry, follow by dried fruits, earth, herbs, soy sauce and slightly sweet nutty notes balance out the medium+ acidity. Medium finish and almost dissolve tannins. It evolves and taste more open and better after about an hour.
This bottle is much better than the first bottle but is almost in its last leg. It meet my expectation taking into account of the price I paid for this bottle.

  • Got some of these 1978 1er Cru Les Champs Pimont from an auction to try at a bargain price. Open a bottle to try during a group tasting and this bottle has one of the lowest ullage among the 1978 Champs Pimont at probably 6 cm below cork. The cork was too soft to pull out with two prong opener and have to force it into the bottle and double decant before serving.
The appearance is cloudy and dull, brown red core with tawny rims, the nose shows earthy, soy sauce, dirt, nutty and some dried fruits. Palate has gone over the hill, showing dried fruits, dried cherry, earthy funky notes and soy sauce. The acidity is quite obvious and it gives a feeling of drinking vinegar. The finish is pretty short with almost dissolve tannins.
This is probably an oxidize bottle judging from the ullage and cork condition. Hopefully this is the only flaw bottle from this auctioned lot.
