The name of this wine is a bit of an inside joke and a play on words. The wine was introduced at a winter barrel tasting ('05) where the signature dish was a wild boar ragout. The wine is a Bordeaux style blend and, thus comes the name Wild Boar Doe. (Say it a few times fast and you'll get it.) Shinn deliberately left "Meritage" off the label because, while made in the Bordeaux style, this is meant to be a young and approachable wine. And it is. A perfect compliment to a hearty meal, this wine has tannic structure and a meaty backbone, but soft, lucsious fruits that drink well right now.

(Shinn Estate Vineyards Red Blend Wild Boar Doe) Interesting and deeply aromatic the abundant nose is reminds one of local fresh raspberries with wisps of summer herbs and smoky black pepper. The palate is medium bodied and soft up front with peppery red raspberry flavors that lead to a medium-long finish with a little acidity. Sensible use of oak has preserved the fruit character and aromatics in this wine — a great choice in a cooler year.

Dry, with cherry, coffee, mineral flavors. Nice acidity.

Got better as the night went on. Cherry, spice, cedar flavors, soft mouthfeel, drinking very nicely. Worked well with a cream based tomato sauce.

Highly extracted fruit gives a nice touch to this wine, overcoming some rough edges in the finish.
