  • Bought on Dec 31st, 2014 (New Year's Eve) as part of my 2015 resolution to drink more CA wines, and this wine had plenty to get my 'knurd sense tingling: 13.5% abv, estate grown and bottled, no oak. Pretty much the exact opposite of 90% of the Cabernet coming out of CA and not much of a risk at only $12.99.

Pop and pour; was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the fruit coming through. A bit of earth at first but a few swirls brought out energetic black fruit- cassis and blackberries with slight peppery undertones. Cassis and blackberries again on the palate with pepper-leather tannins on the finish. Finishes without much astringency and almost no bitterness, but on the short side (in hindsight, this is to be expected with no oak tannins). I thought there was good balance between the acidity and tannins, both on the med to med low side. Everything is very primary but I wasn't expecting the complexity to blow me away at only $12.99 / bottle.

Style & Quality: A-. I have quite a few of unoaked Cabernets out there that purport to "show the true expression of the grape", but they are usually weak and lacking in body or texture. The Bliss Family gets it right.

Value: A. They could charge $15 / bottle for this and I feel I would still be getting a deal. Going back to get 6 as daily drinkers.

    Overall: A-.
