  • Aged for 6-7 months in oak barriques.

Pale lime green color. Very rich, complex and somewhat waxy nose with aromas of creamy oak, sweet white peach, ripe red apples, some exotic spice, a little bit of slivered almonds and a touch of caramel. The wine is full-bodied, lively and somewhat sweet-toned on the palate with flavors of rich creamy oak, ripe red apples, some tangy citrus fruit notes of key lime, a little bit of saline minerality, a hint of sweet white peach and a touch of toasty oak spice. Despite its ripeness and richness the wine is remarkably lively and electric, thanks to its bracing acidity. The finish is very long, crisp and racy with flavors of saline minerality, ripe citrus fruits, juicy red apples, some creamy oak, a little bit of flint smoke and a hint of sweet, toasty oak.

I expected something more massively oaky and less balanced - especially after the heavily overoaked Parcela Única 2011. However, it seems that either this wine carries its oak much better or then they've toned down the oak use in these few vintages that separate the wines. The wine has certainly seen some oak, but the overall style is surprisingly harmonious and the emphasis is on the ripe and concentrated yet still very racy and mineral Alvarinho fruit. Very impressive stuff, but overall feels a bit youthful and in need of further aging - the oak could use a few more years just to integrate it better with the fruit. Overall a terrific effort, one of the greatest Alvarinhos I've tasted. I expect this wine to have a long life ahead.

  • Nose is quite sweet and ripe with caramel, apple and stone fruit, white nut.
Palate is a bit lean, apple, orange, caramel, toasty oak, nutty. Not the level of concentration I was expecting. Feels like this wine is more about the oak than anything else.
Still an interesting effort. Could do without the ludicrous icicle/spire shaped bottle though.
