  • Quaffable and fruity, but somewhat boring

  • Bottle #662 out of total 4400 bottles.

Very dense, concentrated and fully opaque blackish red with a youthful purple hue. Rather reductive nose with pronounced aromas of flint smoke and gunpowder. With some air they blow off, revealing notes of sour cherries, sweet blackberries and blueberries, some floral hyacinth tones and a little bit of crushed peppercorns. The wine is dry, medium-bodied and very acid-driven on the palate with tart and tangy flavors of cranberries, lingonberry jam, some peppery spice, a little bit of redcurrants and a sweet hint of blueberries at the tip of the tongue. The wine is very structured and tightly-knit with its racy acidity and rather firm and grippy tannins. The finish is crisp, tart and quite tannic with dry, fresh and pretty long flavors of lingonberry-driven tangy red berries, some peppery spice, a little bit of smoke and lifted, slightly floral hint of VA.

A wonderfully crunchy, bright and tasty Vinhão that is all about the purity of fruit and intense, mouthwatering acidity. Most likely this isn't a wine for people who don't enjoy high acidity, but for a fan of cool-climate Pinot Noirs and such, this is a terrific little drop. Perhaps a bit too tannic and grippy to be enjoyed on its own, but that really isn't a problem, seeing how versatile the wine seems for a food wine: it is light and crunchy enough to pair well with lighter dishes, yet showing enough tannic structure and intensity to pair well with heartier foods. Even better than the previous vintage, which showed much more noticeable MLF character (although the wine was also a lot younger when I tasted it). Solid value at 20,20€.

  • The wine is clear and bright with a deep purple colour. The nose is clean and developing, showing medium intensity aromas of red fruits (fresh strawberries, red currants, red plums), pungent spices (white pepper, liquorice) and hints of blue flowers (violets). The wine is dry in the mouth with a medium(+) refreshing acidity. It has medium(+) ripe fine-grained tannins and a medium alcohol. It has a medium(+) body and medium intensity flavours of red fruits (fresh strawberries, red currants, red plums), pungent spices (white pepper, liquorice) and hints of blue flowers (violets). The finish is medium(+).

It is a very good quality wine. It shows some degree of complexity provided by aromas ranging from fresh red fruits to hints of blue flowers, including spicy notes. It has a persistent enough finish and a good balance between alcohol and fruit concentration, however it needs more fruit concentration to balance the acidic and tannic structure.

Can drink now, but it has potential to be kept for 1-2 years an develop a bit more of complexity. The tannic and acidic structure are enough for a longer ageing, but it does not have enough fruit concentration to develop interesting tertiary aromas during a prolonged ageing in bottle.

  • High acidity is masking most of the wine aromas.
