This fruity mess of a wine is a real disappointment, given the price and the winemaker (whose work I usually enjoy). Here, it seems like Bevan didn’t just dance on the tightrope between ripeness and excess; he jumped overboard, head-first. In other words, almost two years later, I agree with Cristal2000: this is a hot mess.
Dark red in color, full in body, promising nose of plum, blueberry, and spice. The tastes, though, are monolithic: plum, maybe raspberry, definitely plum, maybe milk chocolate, and definitely more plum. 15% alcohol. Gained a little depth with air, but this tastes like over-ripe fruit in the worst way (like grapes left on a picnic table for a few hours on a hot summer day). Blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot. Even juicier (read: worse) on the second day.
I generally admire Bevan’s work under his own label (particularly the Ontogeny, which remains a solid value in a space with few of them). This, however, is an overpriced mess. It reminds me of a subpar album from one of your favorite artists (like, say, Human Touch for Springsteen or Pop for U2) - kind of embarrassing, best to forget about it and move on. I might enjoy this wine as a (very) simple pleasure at $50, but paying three times that requires more - and this doesn’t deliver.

Super dark purple in the glass, with notes of blackberries, graphite, licorice, vanilla and charcoal. This is a full throttle, fully Russell Bevan loaded and extracted red that isn't for the faint of heart. It is bordering on that 2012 Caymus level of viscosity and richness that makes it fairly one dimensional and a bit like grape juice. While I enjoy other Bevan wines, this is just WAY overdone. The tannins are silky and it is very approachable now, but it's just too over the top for me personally. Definitely a cocktail wine and one that won't be giving much in the way of an intellectual experience to wine lovers. That said, I'd expect it to be a big crowd pleaser.
