  • This wine was truly singing when I shared it with 2 couples post dinner. It is balanced and pure, a really lovely effort. I am happy to have bought 2 bottles! Last night's wine was ruby colored with medium legs. There was no sediment in the bottle. It smelled like light red fruits to me, like currant, cranberry and strawberry. The body was light/medium and had silky texture. The wine finished medium with medium acidity.

  • Prior bottle was almost a year ago and this bottle exemplified the saying "good things come to those who wait". Nose was almost identical with floral, red cherry, earth and lighter strawberry notes. Opened about 90 minutes ahead of time and showed well from that point forward; no extended time needed.

Medium bodied (14.5% ABV) with the same mix of bright red cherry and strawberry upfront that I recalled from my prior bottle. Gains density through the middle before adding tart notes of cranberry and cherry. Mid-body is significantly more rounded and better integrated with both the fruit and the structure than previously. Finishes with earth and integrated mineral and spice qualities. No heat or steaminess, good, but not overbearing structure and excellent overall balance between the various elements. In just 12 months, this wine has made significant positive strides. Has the fruit and backbone to probably improve a bit more over the next 6-12 months with a few additional years beyond that.

  • Fragrant of fruit , earth and herbs. When I finally got around to putting this in my mouth I was surprised by its lightness (Santa Rita - wise). Lovely, balanced wine.

  • Floral, earth, red cherry and strawberry on the nose. The longer it's open, the more expressive on the nose it became. Between medium and full bodied and although accessiable from opening, it's worth waiting a few hours as the wine really hits its stride about three hours or so in. Evolves from what appeared to be a fruit forward style, to a much more elegant wine when given time. Bright and pretty red cherry and strawberry upfront that deepens and adds more tart background notes (tart cherry, cranberry) along with earth and integrated spices. Agree with the prior reviewer that Melville wines can often suffer from heat, but I picked up none in this bottle. There's enough structure to this wine that it comes off solidly, not flabby even though there is a good amount of fruit. It also avoids any drying or astringency from this structure. Based on the fruit and structure, this is probably within a year of peak. Can probably integrate just a touch more and show a little more complexity through the middle with the additional time. I was expecting this wine to be slightly hot, perhaps overly spice driven and more fruit forward than I enjoy and I was very happy to be wrong on all of those points.

  • Interestingly, this one was much better 5 days after being opened and kept under vacuvin. The heat that typically bothers me with the Melville pinots has burned off and the nose is beautiful now. Very nice vibrant red fruit smells jump out of the glass. Very enjoyable now after a less impressive experience a few days ago.
