Central Otago Visit; 12/20/2014-1/1/2015 (Queenstown and surrounds, Central Otago, New Zealand): Attractive translucent deep ruby jewel colour. Nose of mulberry, succulent red plums, spice powder, earth, shoe cream, sandalwood-warm and welcoming. Palate is warm, rounded, plummy rather than the more common Central Otago Cherry character, lots of warm spices, a mineral vein and peach stone attractive finish. Definitely a warm, welcoming and rounded wine but it lacks the acidity, minerality and tension that marks out the better Central Otago Pinot Noirs. Either the winemaker has taken an unimaginative approach or the vineyard is not quite ideal. Nothing wrong with this wine on a simple, pleasing level but it is unmemorable.
