Community Tasting Notes (1) Avg Score: 90 points

  • A trip to South Africa's Coastal Region with Reni, Rainer and Bert. Day 10, Franschhoek and Stellenbosch. The beautiful, 33ha Grande Provence estate (22ha under vine) is owned by a consortium of Dutch and Belgian business people. Except for Sauvignon Blanc, Grande Provence works with low yields (on average 10t/ha for Sauvignon Blanc, only 4t/ha for Chardonnay and 5t/ha for the rest of the vineyards). Interestingly, they grow yellow mustard plants between the vines to fight nematodes and bugs. We tasted the wines at the winery, with young winemaker Thys Smit.

A blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon. 24 months in new oak. 14.5% ABV. Dark ruby, leaning towards garnet at the very edges. Expressive nose. Red and dark fruit, bell pepper, chocolate, spices, liquorice, eucalyptus and balsamic notes, with great, lively acidity, well-integrated tannin and superb length. Fresh and lively. Very good! Still needs some time to fully integrate the oak. 90+
