This is drinking beautifully right now and I’m sad it’s my last bottle. Everything is in balance. Dark red with no bricking. Nose of bing cherries and old leather. Palate is very balanced, with a long finish. Tannins are still present though fading. Tons of structure and probably will be good for 10+ more years.

We had the 2010 Baron de Lay Riserva and the 2005 Ontanon gran riserva side by side for a small dinner party. Both decanted 2.5 hours. The 2005 was first and very appreciated although mellow for a rioja. The 2010 was more complex and bigger which was evaluated higher for a dinner wine. Will drink my remaining 2 bottles of the 2005 soon

(Ontanon Rioja Gran Reserva) Hello friends. As November comes to a close, we enter a new season of wine drinking. Annually, the fall is marked with numerous bottles of thought-provoking Pinot, a sprinkling of cru Beaujolais, and all the discounted rosé we can get our hands on. However, winter is a-whole-nother story. The upcoming season is marked by a decidedly different category—robust reds. Today, we’re celebrating the cold weather with a 12-year-old Gran Reserva from one of our favorite Rioja producers at a price well below its $46 release.See key for # of bottles currently available.
(Ontañón Rioja Gran Reserva) Very dark red violet color; black cherry, dried berry nose; plush, black cherry, dried berry palate; medium-plus finish (85% Tempranillo, 15% Graciano) 90+ points

Still strong after 18 years, could last longer. Alcohol on nose and a strong mouthfeel but still raspberry and beautiful flavors.

Tastes lik it is high acidity although tempranilla is supposed to be low acidity. I think it should improve in the next several years
