AWE Barolo Tasting (Extra Space): Pop and poured. Appearance is clear, very pale intensity, garnet colour. Legs. Nose medium+ intensity, with aromas of salty vegetables or some might say smelly socks even, prosciutto ham, very tertiary earth. Developed past prime. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium- alcohol, completly resolved tannins, medium body. Medium flavour intensity, with flavours of salt, savoury earth, umami, preserved vegetables, mushrooms, prunes. Medium finish. Very tertiary Barbaresco way past its prime. Some very old wine admirers might appreciate. From the Montefico Cru in the commune of Barbaresco.

End-of-year dinner (Jubilee Garden, Safra Toa Payoh): Much better than the last bottle we had - this was quite pleasurable. A really old smelling Piedmont - this was all earth, mushroom and soy sauce and oxidative fruit notes lined with just a touch red berries and spice. The palate was a lot better than the palate I thought, with some semblance of dried red fruit - think preserved dates and strawberries - and then a kiss of sweet flowers along with a little twist of earth, mineral and spice. Tannins has softened, but acidity still kept this nice and fresh. Typical old Nebbiolo. Not fantastic, but charming in its own idiosyncractic way. Went really well with a mushroom and chicken consommé.

Adam's Baby Shower (Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck, Paragon): While the 1997 Barolo was rather too young, this was a bit too old, but it was still good enough to make a very pleasant drink. Lots of age on the nose, with soy sauce, earth, soil and truffles drilled through with a slight funk. It was almost surprising to fine a rather richly fruited attack of rich cherries and berries on the palate after that nose, it was quite thickly textured for a wine this old as well, although it was seasoned by the same soy sauce and balsamic notes as on the nose, finishing with more woody, earthy and mushroomy notes. A decent enough wine, full of complexity and character, but it has probably seen better days. Still though, we all enjoyed this quite a bit.
