  • {375ml, cork, 10.5%, AP 13 02} Deep yellow; off-dry but now mellowed with age, brown apples, melon; ripe enough but somehow not that generous in flavour. Something of a cerebral wine - drunk at the wrong time of day/meal on this occasion - but of limited appeal. The alcohol is a clue to the sweetness is just isn't what you expect; the wine is quite powerful otherwise, with a medium length finish. May still keep (this cork was half wet and broke on extract, but the level was OK) but there's no need.

  • From 0.375l. This is a very interesting auslese. Not as sweet as I expected. Halptrocken maybe? Otherwise it has the telltale HL-complexity, concnetration, spiciness and mineralité. Great wine.

  • {375ml, cork, 10.5%, AP 13 02} Cork was damp nearly to the top, but doesn't seem to have failed. Colour is healthily yellow rather than gold. Nose is a touch closed; browning apples, not much more. Palate is fascinating; a moderately sweet riesling, with no evident botrytis, quite powerful in its custard/apple/honey flavours; it's not really a dessert wine, but better suited as an aperitif I reckon. The acid is fairly soft, but seems to be able to hold things together; this medium intensity wine has a moderate degree of complexity to its ageing flavours but is never quite what you expect from Mosel auslese. In its defence it's rather more-ish; actually it's very drinkable indeed, perhaps because the sweetness is toned back a bit; the tanginess provided by the bottle age is very attractive. And, from this perspective, the alcohol is nicely balanced; it adds to the body without creating a sense of heat. But, it's probably close to its peak; its age is obvious rather than mysterious, which is more the hallmark of truly wondrous wines. Makes me keen to try later vintages of this wine, I must say. Length of finish is medium, plus a bit. Yeah. It' a good wine overall, although just leaves you with a sense of fractionally missing the mark in 2001.
