  • 17 years on this still has fruit, a touch of sweetness and excellent balance. There is a lightly burnished quality to the wine, so it may be finally headed for a slow decline. Right now it's just a perfectly aged Kabinett.

  • An excellent showing for this wine - its prominent acidity balanced by what remains of the residual sugar. There's still a bit of primary fruit left (this bottle showed better than some others in that regard), and the minerality and petrol has turned to wood smoke. Very tasty.

  • Fresh pear and lemony fruit accented by gentle minerally and smoky notes on a lightweight Kabinett frame with restrained, understated sweetness. There's really bright, bracing acidity underneath that gives this a sense of real clarity and precision, and it's really delicious to drink both with food and on its own.

  • I opened the 1998 J. J. Christoffel Erdener Treppchen Riesling Kabinett last night. At 8 years old this wine is fully at peak.

Smoke, pear, lemon and wet stones combine on the nose, while the palate sweetness has backed off just a touch from its youth, leaving a wine that tastes halbtrocken (half-dry for non German speakers) and is both sippable as a solo act and lovely with dry curried rice noodles. The underlay of rocks in the wine gives it the kind of backbone that makes it more than an apperitif, and will (for my remaining bottles) make it a dinner wine, fully capable of being a main dish accompaniment. The best part is that I bought this for $13.99 back in the day.
