Powerful and massive, yet elegant and refined. I love when I am able to use these types of contradictions in a tasting note. But do not be mistaken, the 2012 High Density Pinot is no contradiction but rather a wine that takes me from clarity to clarity. The first impression is a wonderful nose full of dark red fruit, dried flowers, orange zest, cardamom, cinnamon, earthiness, wet saddle leather and a wonderful general complexity. The palate adds to this positive impression with balance and integration. This is a powerful wine, but the fruit is cool with no heat at all, acidity balanced and perfectly composed as are the tannins lingering on in the back end palate. With a length on the finish lasting up to a minute or more as well as a mouth coating sensation, this is brutally good wine. Perhaps it is not the Pinot one expects but it certainly represents the house style in a marvelous way. It will cellar well for many many years. (score is 95+)
