I was hoping that Charmes-Chambertin might be my Burgundy salvation, where I would finally find a wine that had real, and not imagined, flavor and balance, more times than not. Unfortunately, the Mommesin 2002 is not that wine. While it was beyond its drink date, it was still tannic with little in the way of bouquet or flavor, except to say that it had a general Burgundy character. When I compare this wine to a California Pinot Noir, such as Aubert, I wonder why there are all those worshipper's at the frayed Burgundy altar.
