First time trying a John Anthony Cabernet Sauvignon, and it’s a nice wine. Approaching ten years from the vintage it still shows very youthful, plummy fruit, and only a touch of developed character on the back end. It feels like a wine that wants to be over the top, but just doesn’t quite get there. That’s a positive for me, as I enjoy ripe fruit, but not jammy wines. There is structure to support the fruit, and it’s in balance, such that further aging should be no issue.

Decanted for three hours and consumed over the following three. Dark purple in the glass with aromas of dark fruit, cassis, pencil lead and flint. On the palate, flavors of black and blue fruits, chocolate, tobacco, raspberry and cinnamon with underlying elements of pine nuts, herbs and cedar. Thick, robust and structured but also well balanced with tannins, alcohol and fruits wrapped up in the full bodied and lingering finish. This wine is just now entering the prime drinking window and will continue to mellow for five years in a proper cellar.

At home with a beef tenderloin. I had this wine a year ago, the wine retained the structure but seem to have lost some of its luster. Great pairing very enjoyable but a notch below from what I recall.

Cherry, cassis, hint of tar over balanced acidity and integrated soft, puckery tannins. This comes together nicely.
