Probably my favourite Mac Forbes wine. Certainly my favourite site. The slope is pretty serious, faces south-west so is quite protected. Produces gorgeous fruit with a very distinct personality. The Pinot is always great but I think the whole bunch character obscures the fruit a bit when it's young. So the chardonnay, I think, presents a much more transparent view of the site. Never sees any new wood, no malo, no lees work and no fining.
At first this is always a little reductive and so it benefits from a decant. Quite austere and simple then, but once it fleshes out it becomes magnificent. Honeydew, white flowers, earl-grey tea, grapefruit, and chalk aromas. On the palate this feels slightly buttery but the palate weight is washed away by layers of prickly, zesty acids. Feels minerally and taut but at the same time has quite a generous, powerful mouthfeel. Great length with the acidity fanning out over the palate for quite a long time. Gets better and better with more air actually. This will be an absolute belter with more bottle age.

Solid. Austere at first, and a has a little noticeable sulphur on the nose - then again, it's only young and I just opened it. A bit of pear, lychee and lime zest on the nose, plus a little minerally/gravelly action. Might just be the sulphur. Palate is all stone-fruit, citrus fruit and lime cordial. Quite steely, but wait, there's a touch of creamy texture on the back palate coming to the rescue, hinting at some lees action or at least partial malo. (edit: in emailing the winemaker I've found out I was wrong about that. No malo, no lees action). Really good. Refreshing.

Mac Forbes and Jasper Hill new releases (Prince Wine Store - Bank Street): A nose of wet slate and minerals with a touch of passionfruit and a juicy and unctuous palette with a dense finish.
