Comparison Tasting of Sweet Vermouths; 9/26/2018-11/17/2018 (Home): Sweet with Sandalwood and Cassia bark up front, orange peel in the finish and lingering bitter notes. Went to school with Andy and we shared a love of dessert wines and vermouths. It is hard to rank this selection as the top four in the flight are all excellent but different. This completed with the Antica for the most smooth.

Next to Atxa Vermouth a Rojo. Much more aromatized. Cinnamon, sandalwood, sweet spice. Nutmeg is up front too. They also say 'galangal and gentian' on the back label. Among 17 different herbs and spices. The base wine here comes with much more texture. A little bit of an oxidative/nutty note on the palate from the base. In reading, it says they use some of their port style wine to add color and depth. This comes across a bit sweeter than the Atxa as well, but that could use be the sweet/bitter perception of balance. This drinks particularly well on its own.

This has plum, fig and nutmeg spice orange peel. Very nice apertif in a different class than the old red vermouth standards and makes a wonderful manhattan. Very high quality comes through in the bouquet of flavors. Outstanding herbal sweet wine from a very creative winery in Madera area of California.

Here the base wines are orange muscat and valdepenas. Cinammon, clove, nutmeg and wild ginger are important ingredients among the botanicals. Gosh this is really good! Utterly delightful, again characterised by the quality of the base wines and the freshness of the botanicals. Excellent.
