Deep, slightly purple color with opaque core and clear cherry red on the rim. Very rich and expressive nose with pungent blackcurrant juice concentrate, prunes and baked blackberries on the fore and hints of meat and ripe, dark cherries beneath. A wine that has aroma of black currant this pronounced should be Cabernet Sauvignon, not Syrah - cultured commercial yeasts probably doing their thing. On the palate flavors of ripe dark berries, blackcurrant jam, prunes, bitter spice, boysenberry jam, some blackberry marmalade and a hint of oak chocolate. Full body, nice and lively acidity, only a little tannins that are very soft and smooth and a hint of alcohol warmth. Ripe and sweet finish with flavors of dark fruits, ripe blackberries, boysenberries, oak spice and some alcohol warmth.
I found the pronounced and, at times, pungent blackcurrant aromas and flavors quite off-putting. Luckily the fruit overwhelms the majority of the oak, but a wine this full and sweet should have some tannic structure - now it just seems really soft, polished and overdone new world wine without any real character whatsoever. Even though this was served blind and I did actually guess correctly that this was a Chilean Syrah, it has really little to none varietal typicity - I guessed the wine correctly only because of the bottle shape and that I know what kind of wines the Chileans do out of Syrah. Its only redeeming quality was its fresh acidity, that gave the palate nice crunchiness and energy. Not really worth the 14,48€.
